“THE BLACK IMAGE” HOW REPRESENTATIONS OF AFRICAN PEOPLE HAS BEEN DELIBERATELY DISTORTED

Thursday 17th May 2018, 6.30 PM – 9:00 PM @ The Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust, 120 Belsize Lane, London NW3 5BA

A very revealing presentation and film produced by Black History Walks shows how The Black Image and representations of African people has been deliberately altered by Europeans to show negativity.

In the 15th century African people were portrayed in European art as noble, sophisticated and intelligent. However, with the rise of the Empire, these images were thrown out and replaced with demeaning stereotypes which still inform public opinion via children’s books, commercials, marketing campaigns, TV and British and American Hollywood movies.
