In this 70th anniversary year of the Windrush Generation, ‘Sporting Recovery Windrush’ Legacy Open Day, will be promoting mental wellness within the BAME communities. This is a community event where you can enjoy various sporting activities, a Windrush Legacy Exhibition and Health & Well-being activities.
- Sporting Achievement – This year’s event will see current generation footballers like Ashley Young, Rahim Stirling and Marcus Rashford take on the pioneering generation of footballers who paved the way for them including Clyde Best, John Barnes and Cyril Regis
- Windrush Legacy Mini-Exhibition – This rich heritage will be celebrated by a display using photographs, narrative and video – highlighting key figures from sport and local communities, including early footballing pioneers such as Arthur Warton and Walter Tull, and includes Sam Beaver King MBE, a Jamaican-British campaigner who sailed to Britain on the Empire Windrush in 1948 who became the first black Mayor of Southwark
- Health & Well-being Activities – The background to the day will be African drumming and music from our DJ to take us on a journey from the 1950s, featuring Calypso, Ska, reggae, to the present day. Also, there will be Tai Chi and Yoga, Carribean Dance, Reiki and local led-walk.
