The streaming service moves forward with the launch of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Broadway hit by a year, to just before the US Independence Day weekend.
Disney+ has fast tracked the digital release of the hugely popular production.
The sensational, Pulitzer prize-winning musical, recorded at the Richard Rodgers theatre in New York with the original Broadway cast in 2016, was due for a cinema release in October 2021.
It gives “everyone who watches this film the best seat in the house”, said the composer, who stars as the US founding father Alexander Hamilton in the show, which won 11 Tony awards.
ABOUT:
Hamilton: An American Musical, tells the story of forgotten American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton and his ascent out of poverty and to power against the backdrop of the American War of Independence.
Combining hip-hop, rap, jazz, R&B and Broadway tunes, Hamilton’s score and lyrics are fresh, innovative and catchy.
Even though the story of Alexander Hamilton took place centuries ago, certain themes strung through the performance are reminiscent of current events in American society, including the repeated effects of speaking one’s mind, the clash of immigrants and the elite, and the promise of the “American Dream.” In today’s era of a society divided, the musical may serve as a comfort or even a springboard towards actions to change.
