In what ways are Black people around the world creatively producing and sharing knowledge with the use of digital platforms, processes and spaces?

How is Black diasporic digital knowledge-production, community-building and pedagogical work shaped by different gender dynamics and global hierarchies?

What are the related challenges that can be a part of the digital experiences of Black women, and how do these reflect intersecting forms of structural oppression?

This seminar focuses on digital activity and experiences that contribute to Black diasporic digital knowledge and pedagogical work. Drawing on critical race theory, Black feminist thought and critical digital pedagogical approaches, there is consideration of different power relations that impact Black people’s online efforts to archive, learn, educate and co-create. As part of this there is discussion of the connected effects of Eurocentrism and North American hegemony, as well as the pervasiveness of interlocking anti-Black racism and sexism.

Biography

Dr. Francesca Sobande is a lecturer in digital media studies and director of the (BA) Media, Journalism and Culture degree programme pathway at Cardiff University. Her research explores how racism, sexism and structural inequalities manifest in media and the marketplace. Francesca’s work has appeared in the European Journal of Cultural Studies, Consumption, Markets & Culture, Marketing Theory, Journal of Applied Social Theory and Celebrity Studies. Her co-edited collection (with Akwugo Emejulu), To Exist is to Resist: Black Feminism in Europe, was published in May 2019 by Pluto Press. Francesca’s forthcoming book, The Digital Lives of Black Women in Britain, will be published in 2020 by Palgrave Macmillan.
