A lamppost. Night. Two friends are passing time. Stuck. Waiting for change.
Inspired by Waiting for Godot and the biblical story of Exodus, Antoinette Nwandu fuses poetry, humour and humanity in a rare and politically charged new play which exposes the experiences of young men in a world that refuses to see them.
‘Pass Over’ premiered at Chicago’s theatre powerhouse Steppenwolf in 2017, where it became the centre of a media storm after a white reviewer criticised its unsparing portrayal of police violence against young African-American men.
Since then, Spike Lee has turned ‘Pass Over’ into a film, it’s had an acclaimed run Off-Broadway, and now it’s coming to Kiln Theatre for its UK premiere.
Indhu Rubasingham will direct a cast that includes Paapa Essiedu, who wowed audiences playing Hamlet in the RSC’s touring production.
