This year, these three brilliant writers have published very different accounts of their experiences growing up in a world that is racist, sexist, classist and ableist.
In Brown Baby, Nikesh Shukla explores themes of racism, feminism and parenting, as well as our shifting ideas of home, to paint an intimate portrait of his childhood that serves as a compelling and moving love letter to both his late mother, and to his two young daughters.
Nadia Owusu’s Aftershocks is a stunning and evocatively written account of the author’s experiences as a young girl abandoned by her mother, who was forced to learn a new identity and a new language for every place she moved to.
And in Raceless, Georgina Lawton takes the reader around the world, as she journeys to dissect the complex truth behind her racial identity.
In this live streamed event, chaired by gal-dem editor Charlie Brinkhurst Cuff, we invite you to join the conversation as these writers dig into their unique explorations of what it means to belong in an increasingly fractious political and social landscape. You will have the opportunity to share your questions and experiences with our panel in real-time.
