Arguably the most controversial figure in the modern hip-hop scene, outspoken and often foul-mouthed extrovert Tyler, The Creator is also proving to be one of the most talented rappers of his generation.
Tyler he has gone on to make a stellar solo career, with his third album Wolf eclipsing even the standards of his breakthrough record Goblin. And hip hop buffs are now wondering what he’s got to throw at us this time around.
Born Tyler Gregory Okonma in 1991 in Los Angeles, hip-hop maverick Tyler, the Creator rose to fame as part of the controversial rap troupe Odd Future, which also featured the singing talents of megastar Frank Ocean.
He released his low key debut solo album Bastard in 2009 and the irreverent recording became a cult hit with hip hop taste makers. However, it was the success of his 2011 album Goblin which saw him bag the cover of NME. In the same week that Prince William married Kate Middleton, the rapper mocked the event by wearing a wedding dress for the magazine photo shoot.
The controversies continued to pour in, but critics leapt to his defence, hailing him as the modern day Eminem; with many suspecting Tyler of playing an alter ego akin to the rap mogul’s ‘Slim Shady’. Criticism – and the ban from entering the UK – hasn’t halted his success though (while some would argue it has even aided it), with his third album Wolf consolidating his position at the very top of the rap game.
He has released five studio albums, with the most recent being 2019’s Igor. He was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rap Album for his fourth album, 2017’s Flower Boy. Tyler, the Creator is also a Fashion Designer.
